Probiotics for Pets
BioGaia’s Reuteri® Drops [with 400 iu of Vitamin D3]
Probiotics and Your Pet

Living in a fast-paced industrialized world, animal intestines get bombarded daily by allergens, chemicals and potentially harmful bacteria through their food and drink. Illness, pet medications, poor eating habits and “plain old stress” can upset the balance of intestinal flora and give harmful bacteria an opportunity to thrive. For this reason, probiotics play a fundamental role in human and animal health, and disease prevention. Supplementation with a good probiotic can restore an animal's natural balance, and boost the health and well-being of a beloved pet. Given the many concerns with poor quality pet foods and the highly processed food diets to which pets are subjected, a good probiotic can ward off many gastro intestinal (GI) tract problems with pets. In addition, a good probiotic can help your pet’s digestive system to easily transition from one food brand to another.
Indications
Gastrointestinal distress; Dietary transition; Bacterial and fungal infections; Recovery after an infection; Improve immune response; Yeast/candida; Diarrhea.*
Origin of BioGaia’s Reuteri®
The commercial strain of Reuteri® (a lactic acid bacterium) known as Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis or ATCC 55730 was isolated from the breast milk of a woman living in the Peruvian Andes—someone living in perfect harmony with nature. Historically, L. reuteri has been isolated from a variety of hosts, including humans, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ostriches, mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, cattle, horses, monkeys and doves. Today, Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis is fermented (grown) from barley.
L. reuteri also has been found in foods such as meat and milk products. But, the primary habitat appears to be the GI tract of humans and animals. In a report of 18 different lactic acid bacteria, L. reuteri was the only bacteria that had distribution in all humans and animals tested. It has been hypothesized as a possible universal enterolactobacillus. Translation: L. reuteri is supposed to reside in all human and animal species.

BioGaia Drops: A Truly Human and Pet Probiotic

BioGaia’s L. reuteri has proven to be effective at improving gut health and fortifying the immune systems of both humans and animals. Cats in particular encounter lots of gut distress and can benefit greatly from BioGaia dispensed in drops onto their food. The drops are shelf stable, tasteless, odorless (therefore, cat friendly) and need no refrigeration, so they travel well. Standard supplementation is 5 drops per day, whether for infants, adults, dogs, cats or larger animals. If using an oral syringe, 5 drops = .25 mL on a 1 mL oral syringe. There are 50 servings to each bottle. The silicon dioxide ingredient in the drops is an ultra-fine carrier molecule for the probiotic. Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis adheres to the silica and is dispersed and suspended that way throughout the oil. BioGaia in drop format has been a blessing to young mothers everywhere. It is known to reduce infant crying time from colic by as much as 75% within a week. Now, it is available in a form to bless many critters as well. And, information is just beginning to surface regarding the importance of Vitamin D3 for animals as well as humans. SUPPLEMENT FACTS
The fact that L. reuteri is indigenous (occurs naturally) in humans and animals makes it a truly unique probiotic.* It is one of very few species of lactobacilli that is uniquely adapted to reside in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of man and animal.* Most probiotic species have their natural living environment outside the body (such as in plants) and are therefore just temporary residents derived from food.* Because of this, many probiotic formulas contain several billion cultures in order to have a beneficial effect on the gut flora.
However, BioGaia requires only 100 million live cultures of L. reuteri to be effective. The recommended dosage is the same for small or large pets, infants, children, and adults of all sizes. What is important to note is that L. reuteri colonizes to the size that it needs, and not beyond. Because of this, an increase in the recommended daily dosage of L. reuteri to foster better colonization or performance is irrelevant. Albeit, there are times when it may be beneficial to supplement with a double dose when a human being or an animal experiences acute, severe distress in the gut.*
